Above Ground Pool Cleaning

The process of cleaning an above-ground swimming pool differs depending on whether or not your pool has a filter.

Filtered pools have automated systems that continuously circulate the water, capturing floating and submerged debris in filtration units without manual intervention. They also have automated systems that monitor and adjust the water chemistry, reducing manual testing and chemical dosing. Additionally, the consistent water circulation helps evenly distribute chemicals for better effectiveness.

The results? Highly efficient pool maintenance with less time and effort!

Now, let’s look at above-ground pool cleaning steps for filtered pools.

1. Chemical balancing: Test and balance your pool’s chemical levels.
2. Filtration: Run the filter daily to capture debris and circulate the water.
3. Skimming: Use a pool skimmer to remove leaves, twigs, and bugs from the water’s surface.
4. Unclogging: Clear out the skimmer and pump baskets of collected debris for optimal water flow.
5. Vacuuming: Keep your pool floor and walls clean from dirt and algae with weekly or bi-weekly vacuuming. Alternatively, invest in a robot pool cleaner that is suited to above ground pools, such as the Hy-Clor i2. Most suction cleaners are not suited to above ground vinyl pools.
6. Filter backwashing: Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to clean or backwash your filter so it operates efficiently. This procedure reverses the water flow through the filter to remove trapped debris.

If you have a sand filter, regularly backwash it to remove trapped particles and check that the sand level is correct for optimal filtration.

Replace the sand every seven to ten years per the manufacturer’s recommendations. Hy-Clor Zeo-Clor is a zeolite rock like substance that only needs replacing every 10 years. Also, use a clarifier to aid in trapping finer particles and maintaining a balanced water chemistry to support your filter’s performance.

For a cartridge filter, regularly remove the cartridge from the filter housing and rinse it with a garden hose. You can soak the cartridge in a cleaning solution to remove stubborn stains or buildup.

The cartridge will need replacing every one or two years. Also, the filter housing has an O-ring (circular rubber seal) that provides a tight seal to prevent water leaks during operation. Periodically check that the O-ring is in good condition, replacing it if necessary.

Regular cleaning is essential for removing and preventing the buildup of dirt and algae that causes stains. We recommend daily skimming and weekly brushing and vacuuming.

When cleaning an above-ground pool liner of pre-existing stains, gently scrub with a non-abrasive sponge or the soft-bristled Hy-Clor Spa Brush and a mild detergent. Or try a specialised stain remover that you apply directly to stains and leave overnight.

Imbalanced water encourages stains to form and grow on your pool’s surfaces, so maintain balanced water chemistry by testing and adding the right pool chemicals. Clean water also helps prevent equipment and surface corrosion and scaling.

Use chlorine or bromine for water disinfection and algaecide to prevent algae growth. To keep the water’s acidity and alkalinity steady, use a pH increaser or decreaser as required.

A consistent water level keeps pool equipment functioning correctly. It also helps avoid uneven pressure on the pool liner, which can lead to leaks and stains.

Keep an eye on the water level of your pool, especially after heavy use, rainfall, or hot days. If the water level drops below the skimmer line, add water using a garden hose until it reaches the appropriate level, usually halfway up the skimmer opening.
