Sand Filters

Sand filters

Swimming pools require efficient filtration systems to maintain clean, clear, and safe water. One of the most common and effective filtration methods used in both residential and commercial pools is the sand filter. This system relies on sand as the primary medium to remove impurities, dirt, and debris from the pool water. Other media, such as Zeo Clor (volcanic rock) and glass are also used.

How Sand Filters Work

Sand filters operate on a simple yet effective principle. Pool water is pumped into the filter tank, where it passes through a bed of specially graded sand, Zeo-Clor or glass.

As the water flows through the media, dirt and debris are trapped in the tiny spaces between sand particles. The filtered water is then returned to the pool, free from contaminants.

Over time, as dirt accumulates in the sand, the filter becomes less efficient. To maintain performance, sand filters need to be cleaned periodically through a process called backwashing. Backwashing reverses the water flow through the filter, flushing out the trapped debris and restoring the sand’s filtering ability.

Benefits of Sand Filters

Low Maintenance: Sand filters require minimal maintenance compared to other filtration systems. Backwashing is usually needed every few weeks, depending on pool usage and environmental factors.
Cost-Effective: The initial cost of a sand filter system is often lower than other types of filters, and the sand itself can last for several years before needing replacement.
Durable: Sand filters are known for their longevity and can withstand years of use with proper care.

The Hy-Clor sand filter range is exceptional. High quality fiberglass construction and feature packed but at a fraction of the price you would find elsewhere.

Pool Clarifier FAQs

Have questions about pool clarifiers? Get the Hy•Quality advice you need below.

Does a clarifier lower pH?2023-01-16T14:09:48+11:00

No, a clarifier does not lower pH. Some clarifiers actually increase the pH levels, which need to be kept within the desired range of 7.2 – 7.6.

Will a clarifier clear a cloudy pool?2023-01-16T14:09:41+11:00

The clarifier works to clear mild cloudy pool water. In circumstances where you cannot see the bottom of the pool floor, you may need to use a flocculant.

How long does it take for pool clarifiers to work?2023-01-16T14:09:35+11:00

For a clarifier to take full effect, it can take up to 2-3 days and you need to ensure your pool is balanced and the filtration is running at least 8 hours per day. Any pre-existing problems such as algae need to be addressed before adding the clarifier to the pool.

When should I put the clarifier in my pool?2023-01-16T14:08:56+11:00

During the swimming season, you should add a weekly dose of Hyclor’s pool clarifier to your pool and monthly during the winter season.

What are pool clarifiers?2023-01-16T14:09:02+11:00

Pool clarifiers bind fine particles together so they can be captured in the pool filter, restoring the pool water to its sparkling best.
